Is there anything more boring than company values?
Probably not… but we do it differently at sunday. Here’s a summary of our values, our identity and everything we stand for.
Probably not… but we do it differently at sunday. Here’s a summary of our values, our identity and everything we stand for.
sunday is the fastest way to pay at a restaurant. Just scan a QR code and you’re good to go. Diners can pay the check in just a few seconds.
But do you know our story, the values that drive us and what goes on behind the scenes? No? Well here’s our manifesto.
PS: There’s no bullshit here, no empty marketing promises written by spin-doctors.
Isaac Newton, an apple and the law of universal gravitation. Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin. Some of the world’s greatest discoveries have fascinating stories behind them.
sunday’s story is not as riveting: Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydoux have found the inspiration for sunday when their restaurants were going through a rough patch. In 2020, the restaurants of the Big Mamma group were forced to close their doors because of the pandemic.
But the owners wouldn’t go down without a fight. They took advantage of this forced hiatus in their activity to tackle thorny questions like: how to reassure their staff and guests when the time comes to reopen? And what if those QR codes that have been spotted everywhere across Europe could help diners pay the check?
sunday is what came out of these questions (it was called “30sec” back then). A QR code-based payment solution thought out to make the lives of guests and staff easier. Six months later, without any advertisement and without making QR-code payment compulsory, sunday was a big hit at Big Mamma :
And the staff loved it! Some would’ve just left it at that. But not us. We’ve decided to help other restaurateurs use our invention. Was it ambitious? Sure, but we’re already making big strides: 4000 restaurateurs trust us.
With a great product comes great responsibility. But it’s not enough to make it. Here at sunday, we know that our values are what set us apart from the rest. And that’s why we chose them first, before we even chose our name.
Here they are:
And these are not just words. There are the values we share with all our employees. They even became the criteria for hiring them!
Character, personality, mindset, your very own way of facing challenges and responding to adversity… your values make you who you are. The same goes for companies.
They help us:
Making things simple, practical, intuitive? That’s the key to a successful payment experience in restaurants. Simplicity is at the core of our work at sunday.
Because the time of our partner restaurateurs and that of their guests is precious. Choosing simplicity means collaborating better.
It means you sometimes have to set your emotions and your ego aside to ask for help or take a step back. It means you have to organize your time properly in order to set clear and achievable objectives.
“Simplicity” rhymes with “productivity” and “sanity” here at sunday. We know, it’s sometimes easier said than done. But we try to stay focused!
Without trust, sunday would’ve never seen the light of day. Creating a successful business in the midst of a pandemic is no easy feat. Revolutionizing restaurant payments, isn’t either.
Between friends and coworkers, with our investors and partners… Trust is a word we always live by. It’s also a strong driving force for our teams.
A few notes about trust:
Big Mamma’s results have exceeded our expectations. So did sunday, and it’s only the beginning. You don’t trust yourself? Don’t expect others to trust you.
There’s no room for infantilizing employees here. “ Showing trust is giving someone the opportunity to prove themselves on a subject that they are not 100% proficient in. The rest is just delegating.“, that’s according to Victor Lugger, one of the three founders of sunday.
Food for thought!
It’s pretty self explanatory: always try to do better, be ambitious, and never give up. “Beyond”, doesn’t mean ignoring your doubts, it means using them to keep progressing. It means you don’t limit yourself or stay in your comfort zone.
Without this ambition, we wouldn’t have founded sunday. We wouldn’t be saying loud and clear that our ambition is to revolutionize restaurant payment. And so far, it’s working pretty well for us:
Writing this article? It was easy. Writing the future of sunday will be way harder. Great challenges await! Thankfully, our teams are made up of passionate and talented collaborators. They leave no room for doubt: sunday will reach its objectives in 2022.
This year too, we’ll get out of our comfort zones and stay humble. The road ahead to make sunday the number one reference for restaurant payments is still long! It’ll be full of obstacles, mistakes and challenges. But we see life through rose-colored glasses. And maybe that’s the key to our success.
