On Valentine’s Day, were your customers spending more?
Do people in love really spend more? Oh, yes… at least that’s what a study conducted by sunday across its restaurant partners shows.

A romantic Valentine’s dinner is a bit of given on the 14th of February. To celebrate their love, couples were back at restaurants this year. Maybe you even had a special menu on offer.
But did you notice average tickets being higher? Were your customers spending more to celebrate their love? Yes, and the figures collected across all our partner restaurants speak for themselves.
This year, couples spent on average £84.00, compared to £65.15 for a table for 2 on any other night The record? £395 were spent in London by a table who really wanted to celebrate.
With other late evening plans, the average time spent at a table was shorter than usual. Couples took the time to enjoy their meal over 88 minutes (1h28) although faster than the usual 108 minutes (1h48).
Normally, splitting the bill is very common with clients who pay through sunday. But asking to go 50:50 isn’t the most romantic gesture. Diners wanted to show their love by treating their other half, as only 16% of bills were split compared to the 30% on any normal night.
That means that for more than 4/5 tables, a single person paid for the full bill. Even if it was charged to a shared credit card, it’s the thought that counts!
Couples who dined out did not skimp on their stay. With love in the air, even tips saw a massive increase. Among our partner restaurants, restaurant staff received +10% more tips than usual. All in all, everyone was getting a little love, and restaurant staff deserves it more than most!
